THREATENED ATTACK ON THE OUT-SETTLEMENTS.
Considerable alarm has been occasioned among the settlers at Pokeno by the appearance in the neighbourhood of a number of armed Maoris prowling about. Mr. John Runciman, the orbcer in charge of the emigrantß at Pokeno, arrived in town yesterday, to endeavour to get the Superintendent to arm the settlers of the district. His Honour replied that he could not do so until he had first sent to Wellington for Instructions, but that he would immediately communicate with the General Government at that place* and at once send some friendly natives, under the charge of a European, to reconnoitre the country about Pokeno. The settlers, we understand, are talking about erecting a redoubt at Pokeno, as a place of refuge, in which they may place their wives and children, and defend it with what arms they have, for by the time that instructions could arrive from Wellington, the work of slaughter might commence. The people of Auckland are a long-ruffier-ing people, but let word arrive in Auckland that life has been sacrificed to Maori treachery in Pokeno, and we can assure the authorities here and at home, that there will be no need to call out the Auckland militia. The war will have commenced in earnest.— New Zealand Herald.
