LIBERATOR BOMBERS
NEW GUN TURRET IN NOSE
Mass production of the B-24 (Liberator) bomber now includes a new nose turret containing two 50-calibre j (12.5 millimetre) machine-guns, according to an announcement, approved by the United States War Department, from .the Ford Willow Run plant. The new armament on the fourengined planes mak.s it possible to lay an armour-piercing screen of 2000 bullets a minute, The gunner
has a visibility of nearly, 360 degrees, an important factor in sighting approaching enemy planes. I The turret, similar to those mounted in some British bombers, jean be mounted either in the tail oi [nose of the plane.
The New York "Sun" says that German of war now in the United States, many of whom served in France, Russia, and North Africa, said that the British were the best fighters they had met, the Russians second, and the Americans third. "Though this appraisal may wound national pride slightly," the "Sun" comments, "it seems reasonable when the relative experience ,of the soldiers who faced the Nazis "i_ considered."
