SPRING BLOOMS

FLOWER SHOW AT LAKESIDE

MOST ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY

Even though the season has, on the whole, been backward, the display of narcissi and other spring flowers at the show held by the Lakeside Women's Institute yesterday was very creditable, although the number of entries was not as great as last year. There were very good entries in the other sections and when all were in their places, a very attractive display was the result. The excellent organisation, the prompt way in which the exhibits were displayed, all indicated that the members of the Lakeside Institute have little to learn in the way of organising and conducting a flower show. The aggregate, of entries was over 550 and while this was less than last year, it was a most satisfactory effort haying consideration of the many hampering factors. There were not very many classes where there was no entry while in the very large majority of cases, there was good competition. This was especially so in .the photography section, which, in common with other shows, seems to be a most popular one. The quality of the flowers staged was very good and the distinction of winning champion bloom went to Mrs Goulden. Judges of decorative and other sections also spoke well of the quality of the work .which had come under review and that done by the junior and children's sections was especially pleasing. The show was under the control of a committee of which Mrs W. J. Lambie was chairman, Mrs A. E. Brown, the secretary and Miss L. Lambie the assistant secretary and the work done by the committee was responsible for much of the success. There were .two or three stalls which did good business, while the afternoon tea room was a busy place. Opening Ceremony At the opening ceremony . Mrs Amyes , presided. She apologised for the absence of the president (Mrs W. Lambie) on account of sickness and also for Mrs A. N. Grigg, who was to have opened the show, but was detained by sickness in the family. This ceremony was performed by Miss Bowis who was presented with a floral spray by Mrs Amyes. Miss Bowis' said that she felt it was an honour ,to be asked to open the show. She congratulated the Lakeside Institute on the splendid display which had been staged. It took a lot of work to organise and stage a flower show successfully and this show gave every evidence of careful and thoughtful preparation. Miss Bowis added that she thought these qualifications were needed in every organisation, for tomorrow's success depended on today's preparations. When one saw the flowers, fruit, vegetables, and other produce they could not help being thankful for the good things which God had provided and realise that whatever else failed, spring nor any of the seasons- did not. She was glad that members had seen fit to carry on the show this year and she hoped that when the show came around once more the world would be at peace. Miss Bowis declared the show open and wished it every success. Mrs Bongard, speaking of the decorative section said that it was ea very good one and she was pleased to see that it had been given its rightful place, the post of honour. There had been some confusion over the difference between a bowl and a vase. A vase must be always taller than its width and a bowl wider than its height. This should be remembered by competitors for it might save good work from being disqualified.

Mrs H. O. Gardiner said that Mrs Cunningham and she could congratulate the institute on the success of the show generally and remarked that the display looked very -pretty from the stage. The entries in the fancy work section were very good, especially in the class for supper cloths. There was also an outstanding entry in the tray cloths, a very fine piece of work. The judges were: Mesdames H. O. Gardiner and Cunningham (fancy work), Mrs Bongard (decorative), Miss A. Parkin (children's school work), Mesdames Goulden and Wil-

liamson (cookery), Mr D. White (vegetables), Mr G. W. Purser (cut blooms), Mr E. A. Johnson (photography). . PRIZE LIST The list of awards follows:— .
