PEEPS INTO THE PAST

EXTRACTS FROM THE "ELLES

MERE GUARDIAN"

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1896

A shooting match, at which a trial of the newly invented "inanimate pigeon" was experimented with took place at Leeston. Mr G. Heslop, of Irwell, was largely interested in organising the match. Several sweeps were got off. It was proposed to organise a gun club.

An election for the Southbridge Town Board resulted: Messrs W. Hibbard (44), R. Webster (42), J. Kilbride (39), R. C. Burns (38), C. H. Willis (33), F. Paddy (32), R. P. Hill (26). Mr Webster was elected chairman. /""""N *( ? I A preliminary meWting in connexion with the proposal to float a company called the Taumutu and Southbridge Gold Mining Coy., Ltd. was held at Southbridge. It was proposed to start with a capital of £1000, on 500 shares of £2 each. The organiser declared with the usual optimism of company promoters that the people of Southbridge had a veritable "golden beach." It contained gold in every direction. Southbridge wanted something to liven it up and now was the opportunity. There was no great fortune to be made but permanent work was there waiting for hundreds of men at good wages. There was an immense quantity of sand, all more or less impregnated with gold. The sand both above and below the ruby sand contained gold and in fact the land skirting the beach to a depth of half a mile also contained gold.
