LADY GALWAY GUILD

MEETING

Next Friday afternoon, at 2.30, a meeting of the Southbridge Lady Galway Guild will be held in the Town Hall, when there will be a display of garments to be sent overseas and a bring and buy stall.

The splendid work that is being done by this organisation should make a strong. appeal to all ladies in the Southbridge district. A special effort is being made to secure as large a quantity of clothing as possible to be sent to Great Britain, where the need, according to an appeal recently made by Her Excellency Lady, Newell, wife of the Governor-General, is very urgent. A cordial invitation to the meeting, and to a social hour to follow, is extended to all ladies in the district and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance. There is no cause more worthy than that of assisting the unfortunate people in Great Britain who have 'had to undergo a very severe ordeal and who have, in many cases, lost they possessed.

SPRING FLOWER SHOW Thursday, October 2, has been definitely fixed upon as the date for* the annual spring show of the Presbyterian Church, to be held in the Town Hall. Arrangements are to be completed this week and it is hoped that Mrs A. N. Grigg will be able to perform the official opening. Judges have been appointed and with anything like normal weather in the next fortnight the show should be a very good one. Mr J. Moorhead has donated £1/1/to the prize fund, 10/6 to be given for the best dinner-.table decoration in class 63 and 10/6 for most points in the cookery section. There will also be trophies for class 4 and for classes 108 to 116. Mrs W. C. Eggelton gives a trophy for most points in .the decorative section for adults, and it has also been decided to give a special trophy in this section covering classes 71 and 72, for the competitor who has not previously gained a first prize in decorative work at this show. Other specials will be allocated later. P.W.M.U. MEETING Twenty-four members attended the monthly meeting of the Southbridge branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. Mrs L. G. B. Whitehead presided and continued the study of the New Hebrides mission. Letters from Nuhaka with thanks for bags of warm clothing, and one from Matahi, giving an account of a day's work in a Maori mission charge, were read. Members were reminded of an invitation to be present at St. James's Church this afternoon as guests of the . Mothers' Union. It was decided to send more parcels this month to soldiers from the church who are serving overseas.

SOCIAL, TO MR AND MRS COUCH The send-off social ;to be tendered to Mr and Mrs G. B. Ccuch at Southbridge Town Hall next Tuesday evening is to take the form of a short concert, followed by a presentation, supper and a dance. Friends of Mr and Mrs Couch in all parts of the district are invited to attend the function. FOOTBALL In view of the match with College to be played at Southbridge next Saturday, Southbridge players are asked to attend practice tomorrow evening. TENNIS ANNUAL, MEETING All members of the Soufchbridge Tennis Club and those who would like to join should attend the annual meeting of the club to be held in the Thompson Memorial Library next Thursday evening. A report and financial statement covering last season will be presented and officers for the ensuing year are to be elected. There is other important business in connexion with the ceremony on opening day.
