FLOWER SHOW ON THURSDAY

The first of the season in this district, the spring flower show at Lakeside under the auspices of the Lakeside Women's Institute, will be held on Thursday. Since its establishment two or three years ago, the show has become a popular one with exhibitors and its initial success has been subsequently repeated. The schedule provides for competition in narcissi and spring cut flowers of all kinds, decorative and floral work. There is also ample scope for handcra'fts of all kinds and cookery, while the junior and juvenile members of the community have been given ample opportunity to show their artistic ability. The prize list is a generous one and good trophies will be given to successful competitors.. Mrs W. J. Lambie's trophy is to be awarded to member of the Lakeside Women's Institute putting in most entries.

The show is to be opened by Mrs A. N. Grigg, wife of Major Grigg, M.P. for Mid-Canterbury. Entries will close tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon. The secretary is Mrs A. E. Brown and the assistant, Miss Lorna Lambie. Refreshments, ice cream, sweets, and variety stalls will also be provided for and the show will, be open in the evening. The secretary will be a;t the hall tomorrow morning from 10 to 12 to receive entries. RED CROSS SOCIAL In spite of the wet weather there was quite a good attendance at the first of a new series of five fortnightly socials held on Saturday night by ,the Lakeside Red Cross Sub-centre, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Most points at cards were gained by Mesdames D. Gardiner and L. Chambers, Messrs A. Rickerby and M. Nairn. For the dance that followed, music was played by Mrs Gardiner and Mr D. Boon was M.C. A Monte Carlo was won by Mrs R: J. Nairn and Mr J. Legg. All the prizes were donated by Mr and Mrs J. Barton. A dinner competition donated by Mesdames L. and R. Cooper' was won by Mary Hampton. TENNIS CLUB As members of tine club will be busy tomorrow night preparing the hall for the institute flower show on Thursday, it has been decided to postpone the annual meeting of the Lakeside Tennis Club to next Monday, September 22.
