CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL

LEESTON COMMITTEE MEETS

Last night's meeting,of the committee of Leeston Consolidated School was attended by Messrs D. J. Ridden (chairman), H. J. Hurford, J. Goss, C. H. Chapman and R. T. McMillan. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. S. McLaughlin, G. L. Barnett, and A. McMillan.

In his report the headmaster stated that the attendance had been good. He gave the roll numbers as 211 and the average attendance 198. Mr J. Billings, instructor in agriculture, had visited the school on February 21. The linen flax grown at the school had been delivered to the factory and processed. Last Thursday the school swimming sports had been held. Practically all the children ove_r ten years of age could swim. Classes were being held in life-saving. The school flower show would be held next Thursday. Nurse Cuddon had resumed work art the dental clinic. School bus loads at present were: Irwell 59, Doyleston 59, Lakeside 50, a total of 168, of whom 30 were Convent School

A letter was received from the assistant secretary^ of the Education Board about matters discussed with the board's transport committee recently, concerning the school bus services, by a deputation from the School Committee, In regard to the overloading of the Doyleston and Irwell buses, the chief vehicle inspector would visit Leeston shortly to inspect the vehicles. Representations made by the deputation about the curtailment of the Doyleston route and other points were being sent on to the Education Department for consideration.

The use of the electric lights in the large classroom was granted to the Home Guard on parade nights.

It was decided to recommend to the dental clinic committee a small increase in the feg paid to the caretaker for services at the clinic.
