EXTRACTS FROM THE "ELLESMERE GUARDIAN"
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 39, 1896
A swimming carnival was held at the bath of Southbridge. The attendance was over 250 and the programme consisted of nine races. The longest race was for 120 yards for men while the women swam half that distance.
Leeston School Committee considered the advisability of construct-
[ing a swimming bath, but deferred jit to the annual meeting of householders.
Serious bushfires were reported from Little River causing much anxiety, labour .and loss to the settlers.
The cabl.e news contained references to Armenian atrocities, I troubles of Turkey, incidents in | Italy's war with Abyssinia and preliminary proceedings in the trial of Dr. Jameson and other officers concerning their complicity in what is now known as Jameson's raid, in Transvaal, in South Africa. They were charged with making war on a friendly state.
