HOME GUARD
LEESTON UNIT ON PARADE
What was easily the best parade; to date was held by the Leeston unit of the Home Guard on Tuesday evening and its strength was increased by a number of recruits joining up. The men were exercised in squad and rifle drill, and a start was also made with bomb throwing. At the close of the parade the men were congratulated by the group commander, Mr W. S. McLaughlin, on* the good showing made and on the enthusiasm and interest in their work displayed by the guardsmen. Mr D. *Taylbr, ,tiie commander of the Southbridge unit also added his congratulations.
The unit has now a strength of 98, including men from Doyleston, Killinchy and Lakeside. On Tuesday evening there were 76 on parade. During the week-end a daylight parade of the group school for officers arid non-commissioned officers will be held in the showgrounds. In connexion with this, the group commander has asked all owners of rifles who a*e willing to lend them to the Guard over the weekend to leave them at the Guardian Office on Saturday morning. The, owners are assured that .the greatest care will be taken of the weapons to prevent damage or loss.
