LEESTON CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL HERBERT SMITH TRUST CUPS WON

Keen competition .amongst the young competitors made the winning of the Herbert Smith Trust Cups at the Leeston Consolidated School's swimming sports yesterday afternoon of more than usual interest. Especially among the boys was this so. There were hafr .a dozen competitors but the margin between the points scored by the Winner and the lowest points was very small indeed. There were five competitors for the girls' cup and here again the difference in the points was very small.

The weather was fine, but a cold wind blew during the afternoon. There was a large attendance of parents and others interested in the school and the sports was most enjoyable. The headmaster and his staff had charge of the arrangements and the events were got off promptly. In addition teams of the senior pupils gave demonstrations in lifesaving work.

Herbert Smith Trust Cups Five girls competed for the Herbert Smith Trust Cup. The tests included long distance swim, crawl stroke, breast stroke, back stroke, diving, long plunge, under water swim, surface dive and recovery of

weight. The winner was Yvonne Proffitt who scored 82J points, while the runner-up was Joyce Scarlett with 80 i . Edna Merriman and Molly Reid were third equal.

Since 1931 the girl's trophy has been won by Joan Smith (twice), Joan Mercer, Justine Henderson (twice), Colleen Bongard, Ivy Eddy

and Nola Mercer. In the boys' section there were six competitors aand the tests were the same, with the addition of free style race. The winner was Eric Donald with 88| points, and the runner-up was Bob Negus with 87|. Winners since 1931 have been R. McKay, K. Jones, Gibb. McLachlan, L. McMillan, C. Harper, I. Ridden, C. Smith and O. Manson. After the sports the trophies were presented by Mrs D. J. Ridden, wife of the chairman of the School Committee. She also presented the John Bryce cup, for all round efficiency in swimming, which was won by Bob Negus.
