Flower Gardens

BOYS' AND GIRLS' AGRICULTURAL CLUBS

AWARDS ANNOUNCED

The judging tour of the flower gardens entered for the Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Clubs' competition in Ellesmere was completed a few days ago. The judge was the Rev. Father Taylor and he was accompanied by the secretary of the Ellesmere group committee, Mr L. M. Farrant.

The judge was well pleased with the originality of the designing of the plots and some very good gardens were inspected. It was unfortunate that the dry conditions had retarded the growth in many plots, while unfavourable weather conditions at the time the children were supplied with the seed, ihad been responsible for many competitors having ,to abandon the project.

This time the champion garden was found in Brookside, where Elaine Cridge's garden was a splen-! did effort, being a blaze of colour, including asters, phlox, verbena, and lobelia, backed by a trellis of sweet peas. Results were as follows :r— Ellesmere championship: Elaine Cridge 1, Mervyn Rathgen 2, Sylvia Winchester 3. Dunsandel gardens: Margaret Upston i; Josephine Wright 2, Barbara McPherson 3.' Leeston; Sylvia Winchester 1, Judith McLaughlin 2, Joan Amyes 3-. Brookside: Elaine Cridge 1, Frank Chapman 2, Joyce Stanbury 3. Record books: Alma Cruse 1, Josephine Wright 2, Barbara McPherson 3. Certificates of merit: Kelvin Lewis, Ngaire Bryce, Beatrice Johnson, Doris Pycroft, Lyla Anderson,, Audrey Barnett, and Alma Cruse.
