BULLET-PROOF TYRE
A BRITISH ARMY SECRET
A bullet-proof pneumatic tyre of secret design is being used on many types of British Army vehicles. The principle of the invention is not that the bullet bounces off the tyre, but that should it penetrate the rubber the interior construction will prevent the tyre from collapsing.
"I think this country is' the only one which has produced a successful bullet-proof tyre," said the Director of Mechanisation, Ministry of Supply, in an interview in London. "We have had it for some years, but have not talked about it."
Mechanisation of the Army has also advanced amazingly. One works alone is now producing in a single day as many lorries as the entire British Army possessed when the last war broke out.
Similar progress has been made with the production of tanks in spite of the fact that until 1936 there was no large-scale tank production in Britain.
