There were three other wives in the party; two returned in the Quest after a few months but Mrs Wagner stayed on with her husband facing the rigours of the Arctic winter. While there she and the other woman who stayed behind once had to help the men to prepare to abandon ship as it was in danger of being carried toward a number of icebergs.
