MODERN GIRLS' CUSTOMS.
HEADMISTRESS'S COMMENT.
"The modern girl is not so bad as I she is painted—except when she is painted." This was the opinion of Miss Addison Philips, the headmistress of a girls' high school, and one time president of the British Association of Headmistresses. When distributing the prizes at the Guildford I County School, Miss Philips said: "Is it too much to hope that you will have some taste in dress that will prevent you following the fashion when it is an ugly fashion and does not suit your particular type of beauty, and that you will see the ugliness of painted lips?"
Modern girls are very often not so bad as they are painted, even when they are painted. It is too much to expect a girl not to make the best of herself, and very often just a touch of colour on the cheeks and lips make all the difference to her appearance. Many girls go about looking pale and pasty, getting no attention, and consequently leading a drab and uninteresting life all for the want of a little make-up—but only a little.
