London's most treasured civic jewel, as it is the oldest, is probably the baton, eighteen inches long, cut from pure crystal, and inlaid with gold, which each Lord Mayor holds in his hands for a few minutes once a year as a symbol of his authority. There is no record showing how old it really is, but the workmanship is of the Anglo-Saxon period.
