FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
COLLECTING POTATOES
FREE CARRIAGE ON RAILWAY,
The national duty of helping* the workless in their period of distress is being taken up in the Ellesmere district by collecting potatoes, which are to be sent to Christchurch for distribution. The sacks are being stored by Mr Kelleher pending their railage to town. Some of the potatoes promised are already in hand, but others have yet to be delivered.
Since the last list of donors was published, Messrs Harry Winchester and W. Worner have given or promised donations. Further promises will be acknowledged in these columns as they come to hand.
When Mr D. Jones, M.P., was in Lecston last Friday mention of the canvass was made to him by a representative of the Guardian and it was suggested to him that the Railway Department might agree to convey the potatoes from Leeston to Christehureh free of charge. Mr .Jones undertook to interview the head of the Department when he arrived in Wellington early this week, with the result that the Department has agreed to carry the potatoes free for distribution to necessitous cases by the Mayor's Unemployment Committee.
