MEMORIALS DESIRABLE.
Mr E. H. Andrews, a member of the Education Board, who unveiled the original Honours Board in the old school,
for the school and for the young people, and which had been reflected when the war called many of its men away. He spoke of the heroism displayed at .the landing at Gallipoli, and pictured the young men from the farms, shops and offices of New Zealand scaling the cliffs in the teeth of the biggest opposition ever met. Qur men had borne the highest name when visiting the Old Country i n time of leave, which was almost equal to their record in the war. The chairman of the Leeston Town Board was called upon to speak, but did not appear. Mr Wilcox, representing the Returned Soldiers' Association, apologised for the absence of the president of that body, and congratulated the residents of Southbridge on - the fine memorial
they had erected. The organisation which he represented was formed for the purpose of safeguarding the interests of those who came back and of the dependents of those who fell. He spoke approvingly of the excellent spirit that- prevailed at Southbridge to keep alive the memory of the sacrifices made during the war period.
Mr T. H. Bennett, chairman of the Southbridge Town Board, commended the idea of having in the school a Roll of Honour that would keep before the rising generation the memory of those men who risked their lives in the Empire's cause. He added his tribute .to the words of other speakers. The National Anthem was sung, and the public inspected the new Roll of Honour, which occupies a prominent place in the corridor. After the speeches afternoon tea was served.
