THE HERD SIRE.

Males to be used for service in the dairy herd should .be properly grown, and the problem of feeding, exercising and caring for theiu during their useful years is one that should be given much attention. Looking at it in one way (says an exchange) the care and feed. ing of the herd sire is as important as the care and feeding of the whole herd, unless that latter is large enough to require the use of more than one sire; and this is even more important where the income from the breeding 'herd is greater, as it often is, than from the milk produced. One of the greatest advantages of both milk re- ( cording and cow rationing schemes is | that they do encourage the cowmen to | take an interest in their charges as individuals, and, therefore, they tend to develop the art of cow-feeding. There are two factors above all others which make for low costs of production pe_i gallon, viz. : (1) The man and (2) the cow. The most skilled feeder in the world will not produce the cheapest possible milk without the right sort of cow; while the milkiest sort of cow ever bred will not give of her best unless she gets the proper attention for 365 (.lays of the year, week in and week out, Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
