A NEW BATTERY.
Reports have recently been circulated concerning a new type of accumulator, said to have been in course of development in Europe, which possesses many wonderful properties, .including that of a very low weight in proportion to its capacity. The battery in question is that invented by a Jesuit priest, Father Almeida, and although it is not yet a workable proposition it is attracting great attention from manufacturers.
About a year ago a German firm of accumulator makers invited Father Almeida to occupy a laboratory in their works and experiments were carried out for six months under his personal supervision. At the end of this time i the directors requested him to take the invention away and proceed with his! own experiments for a year or two, the idea being that he should eventually! bring' the accumulator back to them in • a more advanced stage of development. These additional experiments are now said to be progressing in laboratories belonging to the Jesuit Order in; Spain,' and an independent investigation is being carried out by a big French industrial group. The main difficulty to be overcome is the liberation of large quantities of highly poisonous gases, consisting of chlorine and bromide compounds, during charging process.
