OBITUARY

MR. W. H. JACKMAN,

The death occurred at his residence, Selwyn street, Leeston, oh Wednesday night, of Mr William Henry Jaekman y who has been a very widely known resident of the Ellesmere district for rriany years. He was in his 59th year.

The late Mr Jaekman had many severe illnesses during the last twenty years and on a number of occasions slender hopes of his recovery were held out. However, he was a man of strongg spirit and possessed remarkable powers of recovery. In the last year or so he had been to the Christehurch Hospital for treatment on several occasions. His last return from hospital was about two months ago and, as usual, he was about in his car within a few days. Lately he had been feeling very well and during the early part of this week was busy supervising the harvesting of crops on several properties he occupied. He even insisted upon taking a turn driving the reaper. Up to nine o'clock on Wednesday night he was chatting with a friend outside his residence, to whom he stated that he had not felt so well for a long time, and was congratulating himself upon having had nine teeth extracted a day or two before. He expired quite suddenly about 11 p.m., not long after retiring to bed.

The son of an early settler, the late Mr Jacknian had a liking for the butchery trade. Many years ago he opened a shop on the premises now occupied by Mr J. MeCann, fronting the Leeston-Doyleston main road. Later on he acquired the business in High street, Leeston, owned by tha late Mr William Hibbard, which he carried on with marked success for a lengthy period,' eventually selling out to t<e late Mr A. J. Manson. The property is at present owned by Messrs J. C. Free and Sons. Mr Jackman next turned his attention to farming, in conjunction with which he carried on an extensive business in stock dealing. For some years he leased the Bavensworth estate and later on became the owner of several pieces of land. As a stock dealer he possessed exceptional judgment, which he used to good purpose. Always upright and honourable in his dealings, whether as butcher, dealer or farmer, Mr Jackman won the respect and good opinions of those with whom he came into touch, and he was always willing to give the benefit of his experience and sound judgment to others. In matters of finance he was unusually

prompt and considerate,

Although he did not take an active part in public life, Mr Jaekman was a foundation member of the Ellesmere Lodge of Druids, at Doyleston, and was one of those present at the inaugural meeting in August, 1885. He remained a member up to the time of his death, and will be accorded a Druids' funeral. During the War he acted as a member of the Ellesmere Efficiency

Committee,

Mr Jaekman was exceedingly fortunate in his choice" of a wife. He mar • ried a daughter of the late Mr J, Doyle, a pioneer settler in the district, after whom Doyleston was named. Mrs Jaekman's business ability has been of great assistance to her husband. Mr Jaekman is survived by his wife and a family of four sons and three daughters. The. funeral is to take place tomorrow afternoon, leaving Selwyn street at <2 o'clock.
