ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY
BY CAR AND TRAILER
MT. COOK AND SOUTHEEN LAKES
The motor car and trailer method* of spending a holiday is becoming increas* ingly popular all over the Dominion. llt has decided advantages over other ways of spending a holiday, chief among which is the fact that the members of the party can camp at any spot that may appeal to them for any length of time they may -wish to stay, whereas those who have no camping outfit with them are obliged to stay at hotels and accommodation houses. Recently Mr and Mrs F. Townshend and family, of Leeston, completed a tour of approximately 1200 miles, occupying about three weeks. They proceeded via Mount Cook to the Southern Lakes district and visited the main centres of interest in Central Otago, returning by way of Dunedin, Oamaru and Timaru. Among the places at which the party camped were Temuka, Timaru and Waimate. At Temuka they found a splendidly equipped camping ground, with all the necessary cooking and sanitary conveniences. At Timaru the Show Ground was used as camping place, spaces being marked out and numbered. The Waimate ground was found to be splendidly situated and here, again, there were all the conveniences required. For a penny plaeed in a slot one could get eight feet of gas, sufficient to fry chops, boil water, etc. The charges for use of the camping places were very reasonable. Very little wet weather was met with and the journey through to the lakes and on through Central Otago proved very enjoyable. There were some very steep places on some of the hill roads over which the car had to go, but Mr Townshend was content to take plenty of time and got through without any anxiety. On the whole the roads were found to be good, and j the courtesy shown by motorists everywhere, including the service ear drivers, pleased Mr Townshend very much.
