Two much needed improvements have latoiy been carried out for ihe Soutabridgo Town Board. This is greatly appreciated by motorists, as the short length of race was difficult to maintain and often overflowed. Tho

second improvement is the repairing oi: the asphalt on the footpaths. In both eases the work has been well done. Tho Leeston Town Board should follow the example of the Southbridge Board and have some of its asphalt footpaths repaired. In some places they are in v very rough state.

A delightful compound of commercial morality, filial duty, proficiency in grammar, and politeness may be found (or may not) in a letter to an Otago storekeeper, thus transcribed: "I have received your letter today about the money owing to Mr I must say to you I ant going to pay my mother \s bill. If she will get things off let get the money off her. I am not going to pay her bill. Ido not owe —: — any money, so I don't know what he means by putting it in your hands to sue me, so now I am writing to tell you that I do not owe -any money. You can also tell him thai I ant going to pay him mother's bill. Let him get the money from mother, and 3 rou can tell him I ant going to pay her bill, so 1 don not owe money.' ' Verse 26 of the 19th chapter of Proverbs seems to fit this case, comments the Dunedin Star.
