The first reference to petroleum in America was in the year 1595, when that gallant Elizabethan figure, Sir Walter Raleigh, recorded something of the lake of pitch at Trinidad. It was not for morei than two centuries, however, that use began to be made of petroleum in America to any appreciable extent. Then it took' the form of a liniment, the supply being obtained from Lake Seneca, New York State. The next development was the commercial use of natural gas, in 1821.
