The Leeston Football Club will hold a practice to-morrow in the Recreation Ground, where the matches are to be played this, season.

Messrs Ashby Bergh and Co. have given a handsome rose bowl as first prize for to-morrow afternoon's shoot on the Ellesmere Gun Club's grounds at Lakeside, in aid of the LakesideSedgemere bazaar funds.

a good connexion in this district, are already booking up contracts for growing peas next season.

At the Racecourse yesterday someone dropped a lighted match in the drygrass in front of the place where the cars are parked. The flames spread over several yards before anyone appeared to notice the fire. Men gathered round quickly and beat the flames out with their feet. Had the fire gone unnoticed for another minute or two it would probably have got beyond control, with serious consequences.

The member for Ellesmere, who has quite a rich streak of humour in his composition, had the audience laughing heartily at one of the stories he told on Monday night, at the farewell social. One day before he joined the ranks of the benedicts he was taking a preaching appointment at a church where there was a strong choir composed almost entirely of ladies. It was the custom for the choir to choose its ow m hymns, and on this occasion the . opening hymn was entitled "Why do ""■I., you delay, dear brother. Why do you wait so long?'' "You can well understand that it was just a trifle embarassiug to me facing a choir of ladies singing such a hymn with all their might," said Mr Jones.

Men who pi'et'er employment at which payment is in accordance with the amount of work done,, and who like the opportunity of knocking up a good cheque in a short period, should give attention to the advertisements inserted in this issue for the Ellesmere and Springs County Councils, inviting tenders for drain, cleaning. In the case of the Ellesmere County Council-, tenders close at 10 on Monday morning, the day of the council meeting, while in Springs tenders must be in by noon on Thursday next, it is more satisfactory to local bodies to have work of this nature done by contract, as it is invariably completed in a shorter period and the drains are ready to cope with flood water should wret weather set in early.

Mr D. Jones, M.P., in speaking of Christian acts at the send-off to the Rev. Harris on Monday night, told the audience of an amusing experience he had had not long ago at Dunsandel. When walking from the railway station to his farm One day he was caught in a very heavy show rer of rain, and, having no overcoat with him, he was receiving a thorough drenching. While hurrying along he was overtaken by a large caravan with texts written all over it in large gold letters. The vehicle slowed up as if the driver intended to give Mr Jones a lift, but as it drew level with the half-drenched pedestrian out flew a tract and On sped the" caravan without stopping. Mr Jones confessed that it took him several minutes to get over his fit of laughter.
