SPRINGS-ELLESMERE DISTRICT

MEETING OF POWER BOARD

A monthly meeting of the SpringsEllesmere Electric Power Board was held at Lccston on Monday. ,The members present were Messrs J. Cunninf. ham (chairman), J. W, Kinie, E. H, Eowell, J. S. Simpson, E. T. McMillan, H. Neave and J. C. Free. Meßsr-3 ■T. E. Templin (consulting engineer) s-nd F. S. Jarman (secretary) were in attendance. The secretary reported that 111 permits had been issued to contractors to date. The chairman reported that the ceremony of turning on the electric current !.'ad passed off very successfully. The ; board's thanks were due to the Leeston lictures Committee, the ladies who provided supper 1 and all others who hai helped. He moved that a letter of tnanks be sent to the Pictures coinmntec and the ladies who provided the supper. The uioticn was seconded by Mr Simpson and carried. GREENPARK EXTENSIONS. Messrs Simpson and Roweli reported having made investigations in and firound Greecpark, as agreed upon at a previous meeting, with a view to ascer fining whether a sufficient number t>f consumers could be secured to make "ertaia extensions payable. They re"vurted as follows:

No. 1 line from. transformer at ra:.!nay crossing at Bussell's corner, ap proximate co;t £475. We have been assured of two motors for milking plants i>nd seven houses for light. This would give sufficient revenue. There are also in this area four milking plants run with engines and four houses for lignt "hat are of prospective value.

No. 2, Everest's road—There are one Ji.otor for milking and three houses i^r light assured. This area embraces four ?nore houses that may take the light at a later date with very little additional! cost to the board. We can also recom mend this line.

No. 3, Greenpark—As this area has already been dealt with we will not go into detail, but recommend the Anglic <i.i Church be included under rate B, and an extension to Mr Thomas's house^ if the £,v.arantce mentioned is immediately assured. No. 4, Motukarara —This area may ;nelude 5 or 7 houses. Three possible* consumers assured us of a guarantee but the others were unable to agree. We suggest ihat this line be held o-nr in the meantime for further negotiatio >s with the householders.

Messrs E. Hodgen, Blanche, C. F. Bowley and L. Harris, from the Motukarara-Greenpark portion of the fistrict, interviewed the board regarding the extensions mentioned in the rport presented by Messrs Simpson, ani -Rowell. Mr Bowley. who was the spokesman, said that the members of the de j utation desired to have information ••.g in charges that would be made for serving them with current.

Guarantees wer required before the lines could be taken to the homes of the members of the deputation, in order that the board would get a fair return for the outlay It: was agreed that the engineer should go into the matter with a view to meeting the wishes of the deputation. The report presented by Messrs Simpeon an.! Rowell was adopted. MOTOR CYCLE. Mr Neave reported that a guaranteed second-hand Excelsior motor bicycle and j sdde car had been purchased from Mr E. T. Buchanan at £70. The machine was in good crder and had been used for a week Ivy the board's man. A ljew motor cycle and side car would cost from £180 to. £200. The action of the committee in purchasing the machine was .approved. PROPOSED ENLARGED DISTRICT.

Letters were received from the Paparua, Malvern, Selwyn and Tawera County Councils and the Canterbury Progress League asking that the board should receive a deputation from those Dodies in reference to the question of including the four counties in the Springs-Ellesmere Powei* Board's district . The chairman said that as the board lad not had an opportunity of discussing the question he had instructed the secretary to Avrite the different bodies concerned suggesting that the deputa tion defer its visit until next mouth. It was suggested by the Progress League that the deputation should meet the J board in Christchurch some Wednesday, but the board preferred that the meeting should take place at Leeston, Wed- ; esciay being an inconvenient day .

Robertson, for the Presbyterian Church, applied to have a line run along the Manse road, Leeston, to serve the manse. The engineer undertook to make an inspection. SOME INFORMATION. Messrs Forscutt and Wilkinson, electri ■c-al engineers, forwarded some valuable information they had collected in Paparua County as to the number of probable consumers and the current required . The secretary was instructed to thank the firm for the information. ACCOMMODATION. After the engineer's report had been considered, it was agreed that the members of the board should meet at Mr Templin's office in Christchurch on May .», at 2.30, to go into the question of accommodation for the men. SOUTHBRIDGE LINE. The engineer said he had given an mdertaking to have current delivered it Southbridge by June 1 and he inteivlsd to keep his promise. FINANCE. Mr Neave, for the finance committee, reported that the bank balance was £9,280 17s, this including £3,000 returned by the Ellesmere County Council and interest. Accounts for paymeut totalled £1442 Bs, leaving a credit balrnee of £8281 2s lid. The committee suggested placing £3,000 on fixed de uosit for three months.
