MONTHLY MEETim The . monthly meeting of tbff Ellesmere County Council, held at Leeston on Monday, Waft attended by Councillors J. Cunningham (chairman), T. A. Stephens, J. Storry, J. C. Free and F. j, Lemon, CORRESPONDENCE. Mr G. S. Manson wrote accepting a lease of Hall's shingle reserve on the Council's terms. Mr D. W. Westenra forwarded a cheque for £203 to cover the EJJesmere county's share of the proceeds of the fee held at Dunsandel on New Year's Day. Mr H. Winchester applied to have Lambie's drain cleaned. Tenders to be calltd. The Recruitiog Board thanked the council for the assurance of its help. F The engineer was directed to call for tenders for the construction of two culverts on Matthews's road. The " Sun " Newspaper Company applied for a share of the council's advertising. On the motion of Cr. Storry it was decided that the clerk should reply stating that the local newspaper suited the council's requirements better than the Christchurch papers and that the council very seldom had occasion to insert notices in the Christehurch papers. The chairman added that the "Guardian" was serving the council's needs as an advertising medium in an entirely satisfactory manner, ia addition to which it gave full and impartial reports of all tbe meet- i ings The executor and executrix in the estate of the late Alex. McLachlan paid the special drainage rate in the Taumutu drainage area under protest. The Public Works Department asked for assistance in defining all roads in the county in the following classes: tracks, formed roads arid metalled roads. —Tne clerk to supply the information. The following notices of transfers were received: A. H. Lewis to T. Bowis, Will&m Golding from John Lewis, G^ H. Gilbert to Edwin Galpin, E. A. Broughton and W. H. Jackman, A. J. Pearce to Mrs A. J. Pearce, Mrs W. Knight to Mrs Alison Nairn. ' Mrs R. L. Cant, Taumutu, asked what the council was doing with regard to making arrangements for a fresh outlet for water which had hitherto been diverted through her land. The clerk was directed toreply to Mrs Cant and also to write to Messrs H. E. Fincham and F. Schnelle requesting them to make the best arrangements possible with Mrs Cant for allowing drainage water from their land to g<P through her property. Mrs Cant further asked the council to clean a drain through, her property.—Engineer to inspect and report. REPORTS. The ranger and dog registrar gave his returns as follows: — Cattle ranged, II head and 6 horses l impounded at Southbridge, I horse, 4 cattle and 21 pigs; impounded in Leeston, 6 horses and Q cattle; poundage fees, 5s 6d; ranger's fees, £i ss; dogs registered for the month, 99. The roads and bridges were all in fair order. The road past Messrs J. Barnett and O'Boyle's properties required a light coat of shingle. A culvert at the Upper Selwyn creamery was unsafe for traffic. The water-race caretaker reported that the races all over the district had been running satisfactorily during thepionth. The river works had Jfln damaged by the recent ftpi, the boulder bar having been!-washed down. A few days' carting would be necessary to repair the damage. Two crossings on Tram road towards Dunsandel required attention. It was decided to have the crossings repaired. The engineer reported, amongst other things, that the cartage of metal from Chamberlain's pit, Brookside, was in hand, and that Mr T. Jackman was busy with his teams grading and repairing roads in the .Southbridge riding. A water-race fluming near Prosser's pit had been completed. With the caretaker he had inspected the position of a race on Mr J. Sowden's homestead road. He recommended that the present trench be filled up and a new race cut. The cost would be about It was left to the chairman-and the engineer to arrange for repairs to be carried out on Scott's road and the Hanmer road. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted: —For cleaning two outlet drains from Lower Lake road to the lake, and Derrett's drain, O. Derrett at 2s 6d per chain. PAY SHEET.
