Notes and Comments.

New Zealand, the very New Zealand edge of the Empire, and its outpost on the other the Empire. ' side of the world, has by its Parliament thrown m its lot with the Empire. The members of the House of Representatives have by 51 to 5 affirmed to the whole world that the British Empire is one. War is now virtually bepun already on the border, shots have ,been fired. The English Government have done their best to preserve peace, and now, when war is at hand the, knowledge that her furthest distant colony has volunteered her support — orenerously offered, without stint or drawback—the union of the British Empire is complete. There will be no lack of volunteers. Alrpady keen and earnest applications hnve been made for the honour of serving our country — our fellow citizens, whether English or Maoii ton — who have m iue Transvaal been trodden under the iron heel of Boer injustice and tyranny. The third UTo-Confidence The No- Motion has been lost by~ Confidence the narrow margin of five Motion. votes —Mr Montgomery throwing m his lot with the Opposition — putting, as he sayn, principle before party. The subjet of the motion was the question of the reapointment of ten Legislative Councillors. Our readers will remember that some few years ago the present Government appointed a certain number of Councillors who were to retire at the end of seven years. That time is now up, and as a great number of Ministerial supporters object io the present nominee system of the Upper House, Captain Russell moved his motion. It met with support from many of the Ministerial members, but as the question was made a party one, several Ministerialists voted against their principles. Many of the present retiring members have offended the Government, who, it is intimated, will not be likely to re-instate them.
