SPORTS V. LESSONS

PROBLEM IN RUMANIA

Sports and military training are blamed in Rumania for having lowered the standard of the class room and caused an unprecedented number or both boys and girls to fail in their baccalaureate examination at the close of the present school year. Only 48 per cent, of about 4,000 presenting themselves for the baccalaureate this year were successful, according to figures published in the local Press. The degree is necessary for those. wishing to pursue special studies at the various faculties at the university.

the professors attribute failures to sport, but among many of _ those who failed the examinations, military and semi-military exercises and duties are blamed. All are obliged to follow premilitary training and encouraged to take part in the national “ Sentinels of the King ” movement.

A decade ago all the student’s time was reserved for his books. Then sports enthusiasts preached the country’s need of physical as well as mental education. The American and English systems of education were held up ns fine examples. The propaganda was so forceful that the professors made no reply. Now they are strongly protesting.

The baccalaureate is so necessary for the boy or girl wishing to get a goocl job that many parents have taken the present situation seriously. The great majority of the employees of the State must have the baccalaureate. The other side of the picture is the fact that Rumania during the past decade lias made unusual strides in the field of sports, and. it is claimed, has produced stronger boys and girls. For the first time in Rumanian history girls are competing in field and track athletics.
