SPORTING

Cromwell Races. The Cromwell Jockey Club opened its meeting in glorious weather on Friday last. It was thought that the attraction the previous day when some three thousand people gathered at the Racecourse to see the Southern Cross and her famous pilot Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, would seriously effect the attendance, but fortunately it did not do so, for as a matter of fact the gate takings showed an advance of £ls on the first day last year. The tofcalisator too showed an advance of £26 on last year, and this despite the comparatively small fields. The racing was interesting, however, but the despatcher anything but good. The weather was again perfect on Saturday for the second day’s racing, when there was again a good attendance, the gate takings being up £lO on the concluding day last year However, the betting on the tote showed a drop, the turnover for the two days being £3BOI as against £4OBI last year—a decline of £2Bl. The starting showed a pleasing improvement and some excellent finishes were witnessed. Results: - Goldfields Hack Handicap of £4O Six furlongs. s—Mrs Ji.
