VISIT OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS

Very keen interest is being shown throughout Central Otago in the forth-coming visit of Air Commordore Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, N.C A-F.C. in the‘Southern Cross.’ » The machine, will leave the : Timaru Airport at 9 30 a.m. on f the 9th March and will after circling the town of Naseby, f proceed to Cromwell where it is due to arrive at 10.30 a.m. Flying will commence at 11 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Squadron-Leader T. W. White of N.Z Airways, Ltd., flying the ‘Southern Cross Kitten’ will arrive an hour before and will direct the ‘Southern Cross’ into the flying field As the ‘Southern Cross’ is a more difficult machine to handle than the modern commercial heavy aircraft, it will be recognised that Cromwell has a very important asset by virtue of the fact that! its aerodrome can accomodate such aircraft as the ‘Southern Cross’. Mr H. M. Mackay, ManagingDirector of N.Z. Airways Ltd. will be travelling by the ’Southern Cross’ as the guest of Sir Charles. In addition to the leading part he has taken in the establishment of the Crom - well Airport, he has announced that he hopes to make considerable improvements with respect to the erection of an Aircraft building in the very near future. This of course will be subject to the approval of the owners of the property. On Friday, 10th March, it is expected that the ‘Southern Cross’ will leave at an early hour for a cruise round the Sopnds. Arrangements are being made to accommodate the machine in another field, so that there will be no interference with the horses during the RacesMr H. M. Mackay has left for the North to meet the ‘Southern Cross’ on its arrival in the South Island, and will be travelling throughout the tour as the guest of Sir Charles.
