VINCENT HOSPITAL BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held at the Cromwell Hospital on Thursday last, there being present Messrs J. Ritchie (chair), W. Jelley, D. A. Middleton, S. A. (Stevens, Chas. Weaver, J. McKnight and G. TAlexander. Dr Austin, medical superintendent, also attended The Nurses and Midwives Registration Board advised that the Board s application to be recognised as grade •*B” training schools had been considered at the last meeting of the Registration Board when it was decided to request the Dept, of Health to report as to the suitability of the hospital tor training schools. The Director-general of Health forwarded the approval of the Hon. the Minister of Health tor the Board incurring by way of bank overdraft a sum not exceeding Ri,OOU tor the first quarter of the present financial year The Director-General of Health advised that under (Section 7 (2) of the Finance Act 1031 a ten per cent reduction in the amount of Government subsidy payable to hospital boards are expected to follow the example sot by the Government and reduce salaries and wages of all employees by ten per cent. The letter was received and after some discussion the Board decided to make reductions dating’,lrom 1 - 4 - 3i in the salaries and wages paid to certain employees but excluding the salaries paid to probationers. The Hospital Boards Association wrote informing the Board that the next General Conference had been fixed for the first week in February 1902 at Timaru.

The Otago Hospital Board forwarded accounts totalling £7 16 0 owing lor the maintenance of two Vincent districtpatients in the Dunedin Hospital. The Board's Solicitor reported that of the maintenance accounts handed over to him for collection he had collected £3Ol 8 2, during the current financial year. The Treasurer reported that for the month ended i 5 431 the Board’s receipts were £844 2 0; Payments £ll2l 1 9; and there was a debit balance at date of £l9O 11 0. The Matron, Dunstan Hospital, reported that during March, 7 patients were admitted; 5 were discharged; 1 had died; while 11 remained for further treatment on 31-3-31 The Matron, Cromwell Hospital, reported that 7 patients were admitted during March; i 5 were discharged; and. 5 were under treatment at the end oi the month. It was decided in view of the suspension fot two weeks of operations under the Unemployment Board’s Scheme No 5 to employ two men at the Board’s expense at each of its institutions.

The schedule of accounts and salaries totalling £621-9-4 d was passed for payment.

The Secretary reported that during the year just ended the number of patients treated in the Board’s institutions were—Dunstan Hospital 165; Cromwell Hospital 228 as against 190 and 264 for the corresponding period last year The Treasurer reported that as he had not received certain figures from the Department of Health he was unable to complete the Board’s Estimates for the ensuing year but had arrived at the approximate levy and subsidy required on the basis ol the same figures for the previous year.
