The Railway Department advertises in this issue particulars of Holiday Excursion fares in connection with the Easter Holidays 1930. The Poolburn Football Club have arranged to hold a dance in the Poolburn-Moa Creek Memorial Halt, on Wednesday. April 2nd. During the evening, a presentation will be made to Mr and Mrs Russell, on the eve of their departure. Our Omakau correspondent writes; ‘‘lt is understood that the Education Board have circularised the School Committees concerned with a view to obtaining their views on the proposed consolidated school at Omakau. It is said that a number of the Becks residents are also in favor of the proposal. By granting permission lor the erection oi two advertising signs on the roadline in the ClydeCromvveJl gorge, the Vincent County Council has laid itself open to a charge of being inconsistent, for at a recent meeting it refused a similar application. It is true that in the latter case that the site (near the Cromwell Bridge) is a particularly dangerous one. These signs, however, arc both a danger and eyesore and we should like to see them all refused.

Cox's Orange apples grown in Central Otago are now fairly supplying the Dunedin marts. This consignment was packed for export, but as a steamer is not immediately available the growers diverted the fruit to the local auctions, where it was selling today at los and tls per 40lb case. After several disappointments, due to the popularity of the novel pastime in the HaweaWanaka district, the Airways Ltd. aeroplane arrived at Clyde on Wednesday morning- Up till yesterday morning, when the machine left for Roxburgh, Capt. Park had a busy time, there being apparently no lack of customers. The splendid w*y the machine behaved inspired confidence. There was not the slightest hitch, the plane landing and taking off as smoothly as a bird. We understand that the officers in charge consider the field at Clyde is absolutely ideal for both taking off and landing, while .the situation could not be improved upon. The ground at Ranfurly is also a good one.

Extensive burns about the limbs and the body were received by John Latto, aged eighteen, when engaged in melting glue at the paint factory of Phillips and Imped, Ltd., Auckland- With his clothes on fire Latto rushed from the building and rolled in the grass in an effort to extinguish the flames, but it was not until be was wrapped in blankets by other workmen that this was Latto was sent to hospital. He was melting glue over S gas jet when the glue suddenly burst into flames. No damage' was done to the building. Devotees of mj r Lady Nicotine who chew instead of smoke the precious weed are not nearly so numerous as they were in this country some years ago, said one of the leading tobacconists of, today. Special chewing tobacco was still kept in stock, but did not find a very ready sale. Two chewers of tobacco made themselves heard when a “cut“ was made in tobacco some time ago, no reduction having been made in their particular line- Together they approached the tobacconist, who admitted the justice of their claim and made a proportionate reduction.

Residents of Poolburn have been somewhat perturbed as the result of a rumour that there was a possibility of work being stopped on the Poolburn dam* The position is that the work done will be governed entirely by weather conditions, and it ia hoped that a mild season will be experienced for some time. A start had been made with the concrete work, which could not be continued in very frosty weather. It was expected that sufficient work would be done to provide additional storage for tha Ida Valley and Calloway irrigation schemes. The Minister of Lands has stated that the Commission of Investigation into cases of hardship arisingioutof the imposition of the super land tax has made some substantial reductions, although he was not yet prepared to disclose the amount of the remissions. The commission had now disposed of the 4Q7 out of 087 applications lodged, and had completed its Wellington sittings and proceeded to Napier to hear oral evidence- For the same purpose Wanganui, Palmerston, North, and Canterbury also would be visited.

Two boys, aged sixteen and twelve respectively, who escaped from the Mount Albert Boys* Probation 1 ionic on Saturday were recaptured at Mercer yesterday morning.
