MINING
The first forward move in the construction of the Golden Terrace dredge on the claim at Tucker Beach, above the Lower Shotover bridge, was consummated on Saturday last. This was the launching of the pontoon winch is to carry the necessary machinery and superstructure for the working of the dredge. The work of building the pontoon for the contractors, Messrs Sparrow and Co. Dunedin, has been going on for some months past under the supervision of Mr J. Dumsday and more recently that of Mr 11. Kout, foreman in Messrs Sparrows foundry. This presented a somewhat formidable task. However, to their credit the ship or pontoon may be said to be a fine piece of workmanship. It measures 107 ft by 40ft and is of a depth of 9ft, the whole of the interior being braced with angle iron to give the necessary stability. The ladder well measures 51ft by 6ft. In its colouring of steel grey, the "ship" has the appearance of a small dreadnought. The launching was carried out in the presence of about 200 people. Right on the appointed hour the pontoon, which was now straining at her mooring, was cut adrift and the slid down gracefully on the ways into the paddock—a perfect launch. It niiuht be mentioned that this will be the largest dredge that has ever been built in the Dominiin. —'Wakatip Mail.'
