FIRE ENGINE'S LEAP.
Superintendent Woods, of Grimsby Fire Brigade, had a remarkable escape from de\t.h when a motor fire engine he was driving plunged over the quay into the Alexandra Dock. A train of goods trucks had caught fire in a place that was difficult of access, owing to innumerable sets of railway metals, stacks of timber, goods trains, a strong wind, and driving rain. The crew of the fire engine had jumped off and the engine was taking up a position on the wooden jetty, when it suddenly ran backwards, turning a somersault as it plunged into the dock. For the moment it was concluded that the driver had gone with the machine, but as the bonnet of the engine poised for a brief moment in the air the superintendent flung hiinself clear of the driving seat on to the quayside. „
