MINING

In view of the fact that the Cromwell holders of claims on the Kawarau River have suggested that some of the slips and obstructions in the river should be removed by the parent company—the Kawarau Gold Mining Company—the directors of that company called on its engineer, Mr Vickerman, to visit the river and prepare a report 011 the practicability of the proposal. Mr Vickerman acted as requested, and hi.s report was considered at a meeting of the directors on Monday evening of this week, when it was decided to send a copy of the report to each elaimholder, with an intimation that if claimholders thought that any suggestion made in the report could be profitably carried out the parent company would be prepared to consider it under the terms of the original agreement which provides that when any obstructions arc removed it must be done at the expense of the claimholders who are to benefit thereby. Shortly put, the position of the Kawarau Company is in effect to say to the claimholders: ‘Tell us what yon want done, and if we approve we will do it for you at your expense.”
