VINCENT 15 v. MANIOTOTO 3. I Vmtetifc Ketains the Topp Cup. The 'flu was responsible for a big ( alteration in the Vincent team—the face that among others, S. Tohill half and W. Campbell (five-eighths) were unable to play was expected to play havoic with the combination. It certainly did effect it, particularly at the start when Clark and Hayes started ofl weakly, but the home team soon got into their stride, and their combined play was better than Maniototo's. Vincent deserved their wiu. There was not much difference j between the teams, Vincent's play being perhaps a bit more finished. The weather was gloriously fine and there was a record attendance at the Clyde ground — £6i being taken at the gates- Thetean:s lined out as follows — Maniototo Full-back, Hall ;f, . Forrester, Donnelly, Nicholson ; fiveeights, Leyden and Niven : i !'• Clouston ; forwards, M. Clark, Pringle, Allan, J. Clark, J. Donnelly, J. Redding, W. Small and Kippenberg. Vincent—Full-back, B. Campbell ; |, Schieb, V. Jolly, Hannay ; liveeights, Hayes, Townsend ; half Chirk ; forwards, Thomas, Elliott, Carline, Campbell, Anderson, Sutherland, G. . Larking, A. Marslin (capt.) Vincent, playing with the sun in tueir eyes, hicked off, the ball being fumbled, Thomas immediately put the visitors on the defence. Leyden saved. Townsend made a nice run, but his pass in went astray- The Maniototo forwards were inclined to get off-side, and they were penalised, Townsend missing a shot at goalPringle showed up in a good rush by the visitors forwards. Eob Campbell sent them back, and good play by Marslin saw Townsend and Hannay come into a good rush, in which the latter just failed to score- A force brought relief- Niven intercepted a pass intended for Townsend, and after running strongly, transferred to Leyden who scored. Donnelly missed an easy kick. Maniototo 3, Vincent 0. Schieb, who was fielding splendidly made a good dash up the touchline, and as the result of a nice opening by ■ Townsend a score looked likely, but ' Hall saved- Clouston and Hall each ' unsuccessfully attempted to kick penalty goals. The play was fast and ! interesting both sides throwing the ball about in good style: Vincent's first score was a penalty goal—a magnificent kick by Hannay from just inside haifway. - VincSnt 3, Maniototo 3An exchange of kicks between the ' full-backs saw Campbell race up the centre with the ball in his posses- : slon. He beat a couple ef men and then passed to Townsend, who ran straight, and then handed on to Hannay. That player dashed at ' the corner to score a flue try. The kick at goal missed and half time went, with the score Vincent 6, Maniototo 3. The second spell opened with ' plenty of dash, the home side gradu ally working down the field. From ' a scrum in front of the visitors goal Townsend secured and potted a nice ' goal. Vincent 10, Maniototo 3. The home team continued to attack, and made, some good rushes, Sutherland on one occasion gaining a lot of ground on his own. Marslin, who was playing a great game, secured, and centred well, Townsend beating two opponents in a scramble ' for the ball. Hannay goaletl. Vincent 15, Maniototo 3. Tom Clouston was injured shortly after the start of this spell, and Churchill came on- Plain was fairly even for a spell, the next incident of note 'being a great dash down the line by Hannay. Ho was thrown out of touch and in the spill he had the bad luck to injure a wrist. He went off and Booth came on- The new man was no sooner on than he made a big' bid to score. Frank Donnelly made a good but fruitless attempt to kick a penalty- The game continued bright and interesting, but there was no further score, and the game, which was played in a very friendly spirit, ended. Mr I). Cahill made a splendid referee. For Vincent, Eob Campbell was j as safe as a house at full-back, his kicking being of great service. The three-quarters all played well, young Hannay being particularly good. Ho is fast developing into a top-notcher. Townsend, however, was easily the daddy of them all and the best back on the ground- Marslin played very well at wingforward, while of the pack Elliott, Anderson, and Sutherland showed up most. For the visitors the backs were all safe, Leyden being the best. In the forwards Pringle, Redding and Jack ' Donnelly were the pickIn the evening the teams were ' entertained at a smoke ceucert in the Library room, Mr W A. Harlow , (president of the Vincent Sub-union) 3 presiding over a good attendance. " J The usual appropriate toasts were J honoured.

A dance held in the Town Hall was also very well attended. The following team has been selected to represent the combined Vincent - Maniototo team Backs, Miller, Frank Donnelly, T- Hayes, Townsend, Niven, Clark, W. Campbell, V. Jolly, Leyden, Hannay; forwards Pringle, Thomas, Redding, DCampbell, Donnelly, Bell, Anderson, Cavliue, Sutherland, Small, Marsliu (captain). As a curtain raiser to the county match the North v. South schools match was played- A most interesting game it proved—both teams playing good football There was little between them, and it was anyone’s game right to the finish- South won by 3, a try by A. Annan, to nil. An effort is bring made to arrange a schools county match with Maniototo and the above game would serve as a trial match -
