THE HEARST ATTITUDE.

Mr William Hearst, the proprietor of America's yellow journal syndicate, which strenuously opposed America's participation in the Great War, in a two-columns signed statement set in black type' in the New York American. indicates that if a Turkish war breaks out and threatens; to become a movement against the white race, he will urge America's entrance into- the conflict. "Good Christian people of America ! (iood citizens, beneficiary of our Occidental civilisation, centre yonr attention on the war in the Near' East," states the article. ""Do you think it does not affect you because it is so far away? It concerns you more than events that happen at your door. It concerns yon more than the European war did. The European war was merely a war between white peoples. "The situation in the Near East may he the beginning of a, great race war, the great, truly great, war of the world, a war of Oriental races against Occidental races, a war of strange religions, strange standards of living and standaids of morality, and strange social castes and customs against civilisation and the standards of life and democratic social conditions which determine our existence. It may be the beginning of another tide of Oriental invasion and yellow peril, a tide of terror, slaughter and devastation, such as menaced Europe when Attila swept down on the white race with his horde of Huns, and when ih<? Turks carried the banner of Mahomet with cruelty and fanaticism to the gates of Vienna. If this situation in the Near East is not the beginning of such an invasion, it is the prelude to it, and a clear indication of the situation which may make such a danger possible. "It the three greatest of Europe's white nations are unable to resist the little isolated Turk, and, unable to prevent him again invading South-Eastern Kurope. how long will it be before other Oriental nations realise Europe's weakness, and unite to defy it, if not even, to invade it. ".Men. women. Christian America, citizens of civilised America, centre vow; attention on the Near East, and realise that what is happening there may some time happen to our shores. Vye do not want war, hut war is not .'liniinated by the fact that we do not ivant it. "If the blow is not delivered now, M the inevitable conflict is postponed, surely Kurope would employ the lospite to end her family feuds, build up the strength of all her nations, unite the white peoples in power and purpose in order to present an undivided front to ler foe. and we Americans, proud of our •ace, nation, and ideats. must take care hat we do not. with the weak, waterysyccl policies of pacifism, render our■elvos so powerless that when the world var crisis comes we shall be unable to uoteet our civilisation, our religion, or wen ourselves."
