extraordinary dexterity and quickness of eye and mind have been displayed by Miss Nina K Holmes, who nt the Detroit Post Office the other day sorted and distributed in eight hours 20,010 letters. .Miss Holmes, who is 20 years old, lays claim to be the , champion mail handler of the United Mates. -.\ud oa ww towtesfcs, l\«s to the title. She is wondering whether any post office employee in England can go one better, and whether she is not champion of the world. "It's a sporting proposition," says Mis? Holmes. '-Let any English man or woman see bow many letters in eight hours he or she can pick up, and after deciphering the addresses put in their proper places for sending to their destinations without a mistake. Though the British postal workers do not seem inclined to take up Miss Holmes' challenge, they remain quite cool and collected when confronted with her achievement. There is a girl working in a provincial post office who has been known to sort 55 packets per minute. Red tape will not allow the girl to be more -closely identified, so perhaps at this stage her claims cannot be contrasted with those of tho American champion. Forty letters every minute is a common achievement in' British Post offices, both in London and in the provinces. Super-sorters have been known to sort (50 letters in so many seconds. A London paper makes this comment:—"lt will easily bo understood that celerity in sorting is a- matter which interests officials and workers alike. As a matter of fact, Miss Holmes' challenge comes at rather an opportune-time, because a committee which has been sitting for some months is expected to report before very long on the question of how many packets a clever conscientious sorter may be expected to handle in a given period
