The total production of milk in the United States in 1921 was 98,862,276,13001b, according to the results of an inquiry made by the Washington Department of Agriculture l . This quantity shows ai large increase over the year 1920. when a similar inquiry placed! tho total' production at 89,655,000,0001b. On tho basis of production per head of the population this amounted to an increase from 100 gallon* (8601b) in 1920 to 107 gallons in 1921. Cows in milk on farms increased by 341,000 head during 1921. there being 24,028,000 head on Ist .January, 1922, compared' with 23,594,000 head on Ist January, 1921. In addition the number of cows in milk not on farms is given as 1,250,000. Thousands of head of cattle are being *. abandoned in North Queensland' to die owing to the low values and the high cost of removing them to localities where there is gfass and water. This statement was made by Mr Hugh MoMaster, of Cevencourt Station, near Cloncurry. North Queensland. The - course is being adopted' on account of the severe dry epell now being experienced, particularly to the south-west of Cloncurry. In normal seasons beneficial rains are experienced in Qoncurry region between May and l November. Mr McMaster added that if rain does not fall before December probably 75 per cent, of the 30.000 head of cattle on Buckingham State Station will be lost.
