Certain members of (ho Koval Zoological Society of Ireland have to their credit an heroic achievement. Iho Council inspect the Dublin Zoo every Saturday, and breakla-.'d together. On one occasion eggs were on the menu, and were declared by the zoologists to he of exceptionally delicate flavor. I hey were somewhat surprised, however, to he. told by Sir Charles lb'll that the eggs thev had eaten had been brought by him from China when touring the Far East 10 years before! Evidently the day of big families is not entirely past, says the Auckland Star. A case came before the court there in which the plaintiff admitted lie had nine children. Later, when the defendant was giving evidence, she mentioned casually that she was the mother of seventeen children, of whom sbo bad reared nine. How lough and resisting is the human body. A child of eleven at Lewisham. near London, swallowed a halfpenny eight years ago. Lately she hejrjin to suffer diseomlort. and she was examined under X-rays. These showed th;,i there was a round object in her body just above the stomach. She was operated on and the halfpenny recovered. worn to the thinness of a piece ol paper. It was only just possible to make out Britannia. Any other metal object would have poisoned the child, hut copper has a deadly effect on d'angcwws bacteria*, and thus no harm was done.
