THE KING'S ECONOMICS
As the result of strenuous wielding of the. economic, axe in the household of King George an annual saving of something like CIO,OOO is being made, says the London representative of the. New York Herald. The King, inspired by his .subjects' efforts to save, some, months ago ordered a special investigation, and a Treasury expert was lent for the purpose. -With bis Majesty directing. Ibe whole Royal .household was overhauled. including Buckingham Palace. Windsor Castle and other Royal residences. Completion of the las know, with a saving reported, isi pleasing to the King, whose financial resources are said to be overestimated by the public mind. Household administration wilL.not be. impaired, nor functions cut out. but all will be less elaborate. The money granted by the House of Commons annually for maintenance of the Crown and its household remains at the same figure as it. was, less than Col It 1.000. in 101-1, and the King lias resolutely declined to apply for an increase ill spite of the general rise in the cost of living and supporting ctail's. That means that. King George has had lo draw considerably upon bis private' resources clllriii gtho last eight years. Last year bis Majesty retrenched in personal expenses. He cut down his racing stud, curtailed his stables and put bis yacht Britannia into dry dock. The last named act had an effect that was not calculated, for in this year's show at ('owes many other owners withdrew their big yachts, and the King felt that an unfortunate blow had been sundered by the sport. He has now decided, with the better financial position as the result of ober economies, to hoist the Britannia's pen mint again next year. He also plans soon to bring bis stud horses lip to the same standard as prevailed in the time of King Kdward VII. King George is forced to pay an income fax on bis private fortune, and the shilling reduction benefits bun as well as evorvbodv else.
