It is not generally known that Great Britain possesses the oldest agricultural research institution in the world'. Over eighty years ago a number of British agriculturists set aside am extensive site for experiments in the growing of wheat and other crops. The work was carried through its early stages' by the liberality and enthusiasm of private individuals, and it was' so successful that ultimately it was recognised and aided by the State. Many valuable results have been achieved, particularly with regard to the use of manures 1 , the general treatment of the soil, and the control of the various pests which trouble the farmer and often bring his labor to nought. Recently the Royal Agricultural Society invited the co-operation of landowners and' farmers in testing the results which have been worked out at this centre, and it is l significant that more offers of land and helpers have been received than can be entertained.

In addition to reducing wool frejghts from South Africa to Great Britain to jjcl )ier lb. the conference lines have advised exporters tbat the following rates will apply to shipments to North America :—To Boston and New York, scoured wool., ljjd per lb; greasy wool. Id per lb; skins. 52s Od per 40 cubic feet, or Id per lb at shippers' option. The freight to Toronto is , I t d higher in each case. The Director of Agriculture for Southern Rhodesia reports that there should be 137,000 native bullocks fit for slaughter during the year, of which 62,000 are available for export, but so far there are few facilities for getting them frozen and shipped. Cattle stocks are rapidly increasing, and when works are erected that country will be another of our beef rivals. is a good plan.
