passion for any man. According to the Paris edition of the New York Herald, Germany is concerned in an organised plan to flood 1 the world with cocaine and other drugs. French anti-drug officials hear out the experience of the New York police that Germany is the source' of supply. It is stated that the present German output of cocaine is a synthetic product made from coal-tar and not -from coca leave**, and is. therefore, produced at tin extremely lo wcost. The drug i« sold to dealers in Paris at £lO a lb, and even this comparatively low price represents an enormous profit. The systematic efforts of French officials to wipe out the drug traffic continues unabated. Frequent night raids in the Montmartre district have their counterpart in many other large erhee throughout the country. When the finances of the Palmerston North High School Board were being considered, the chairman (.Mr W. F. Durward) drew attention to the fact that the board had an overdraft at the bank of £1350 (states Daily Times). An oycrdraft was a luxury not permitted to such bodies, and members were legally liable for the interest. The reason tor the large overdraft was that the Government had not paid what was duo to the board. The Government was £950 behind in actual payments apart from amounts in dispute.
