The conservation of every drop ot water is of vital importance to Central Otago, and it is pleasing to see private enterprise in his direciiou. Mr Win Smith, the well-k uiwn contractor, has just about completed for Mr Craig, of Karnscleugh, a huge dam, the capacity of which will be sufficient to ensure a full supply ol water in the driest season.

While on the subject of water. | There are many inquiries as to when the Manuherikia scheme is going to be available. It is to be hoped that another season is not going to pass before the water is turned onto our thirstv lands. When the Farmer comes to town he is cordially invited to visit the offices and showrooms of Messrs Todd Bros. Limited. The great convenience in this, to the visitor, is that he can garage his car and obtain his farm requisites under the one roof, where he will find only hospitality and attention, coupied with good value A claim by a stockowner in a case heard at Wellington last month involved a question of general interest to farmers. Does the stock agent ar- 4 ranging the sale assume liability tor payment by the purchaser '. J In the claim a common usage to that effect was urged, but the plaintiff was nonsuited and the usage therefore does not legally exist. A peculiar incident occurred at the port on Monday (states the Napier 'Telegraph.' A quantity of egg preservative packed in a spirit case was being shipped by one of the local vessels, and during the process of loading, one of the bottles in the case was broken. Of the watersiders working the vessel there were one or two who thought this an oprortune lime for a free ' spot," and so began to lake the liquid as it leaked from the case. However, what was at first thought to be tinusualiy gocd spirit proved to be undesirable to the constitution, and resulted in those concerned being obliged to seek medical aid. A fair amount of amusement was caused in town the other day (says Wednesday's 'Westport 'Times') when the Railway Department had a gang of men engaged in bringing in stray horses from the railway line between the bridge and Cape Foulwind. In the morning about ten horses were landed from Carter's Junction and placed in the pound, and in the afternoon another batch of about twelve arrived and were placed in the keeping of the poundkeeper. The appearance of the pound yard, with horses of all sizes and colors and conditions, resembled a circus.

An unpleasant incident occurred during the Nottingham v Hampshire cricket match. Newman became angry because the crowd barracked when he rearranged his field in order to meet round the wicket howling. He hesitated to begin the over; and Tennyson ordered him to the pavilion. Newman, on retiring, kicked down the wicket and used objectionable language. ''Way Down East." "Something more than a moving picture" is claimed for this great drama by the master hand of D, W. Griffith, which will be screened at Hull's Pictures, on Thursday. Eleven reels of continuous action, makes its three hours' screening seem like a single hour. There is not a wasted foot or film in this tremendous production, the scene changing from tragedy to humour, from romance to comedy, from spectacle Jto superbly acted emotion, and from splendid colour photography to lovely "shots" of varied interest but all beautiful. In this drama, acting for the camera reaches its highest ievel yet, and one forgets that the characters of the story are anything but the actual living men and women of the story. The caste is headed by Lillian and Dorothy Gish, and Bathelmess. Admission 2s 2d and od Commencing 7. 45 sharp.

Whilst a moto. 'orry laden with benzine was on its way from Wellington to Pahnerston North, it took fire on a hill and was totally destroyed. The fire burnt fiercely, and although the outbreak occurred aA._3.30 in the afternoon, it was 7 o'clock in the evening before traffic could be resumed on the road, large numbers of cars and lorries being held up meanwhile. Wool growers desiring to have their clips scoured would be weil advised to communicate early with Messrs John Haig & Co., the Mill, Omakau.

The Dunedin Star' has been shown a silvered penny which a shopkeeper received as a half a crown. The , appearance of the coin is very deceptive and trial "passes' among a group of friends wete successful in several cases. For the first 5 months of the financial vear (according to Mr Massey) the public expenditure has been nearly two millions sterling less than from April Ist to August 31st 1921. The Dominion, however, has not improved its position relative to the corresponding period of last year by that amount, for the 5 months revenue was £ISOOOO less. Easily the biggest saving was in the railways— .£851,000, the next biggest being ,£183,000 in the Post and Telegraphs. Attention is directed to the advt of Mr Miles (Universal Supply; George street, .Dunedin. Housewives will be interested in the price-list of crockery. Oh, Maisie and Daisy, get up and come out! There's midnight and music and magic about. I hear "fairy pipers" far down in the glenIt must be the march o( the Jittlc brown men! They'e skirling a strathsprcy piping a reel, Hark how they shout as they double anr wheel! F .-,,:., 1 1 w.-y -tcad, and they mean it, be -ure, ■•Hi ee cheers for Woods' Great Peppenjiint Cyfe*"

The townspeople turned out well at Clyde on Friday night last to hear the programme of music given by the Alexandra Brass Band'. The membership of this popular organisation has been considerably increased lately by the addition of several lads, but this fact has no detrimental effect on the quality of the playing. As a matter of fact the music was distinctly good, and Conductor Bringans is to be congratulated on bringing the Band to such an efficient state. The Community singing, in the Town Hall attracted a crowd which filled the building to overflowing. The leaders, Messrs Moorehead. G- Campbell and W. Bringans, with Mrs Turnbull at the piano, had no difficulty in getting the audience to join in, everybody entering into the spirit of the thing wholeheartedly. It was apparently much enjoyed- We understand that there was a generous response when the collection was taken up.

Australian orders for oats are by no means exhausted, and the continued inquiry has a reviving effect on what was formerly a very lifeless market, causing a rise in price of about 2d per bushel. The Dunedin 'Star says that the holders of wheat below milling grade are in a quandary as to an outlet, the Minister of Agriculture having so far done no more than raise their expectations with indefinite promises. His statement as to the financial aspect of wheat control was also vague, though it indicated a struggle on the Government's part to avoid loss over the whole business, the present hope being to finish up about "all square. The Customs Bill, the second reading of which was agreed to in the House last week) deals chiefly with countries Having a depreciated currency. The Hon. Downie Stewart said that it was possible that the dominion might have to resume trade with Germany at an early date, and we must be in a position to protect British goods in that event. There had been what had been called a " catastrophe boom " going on in Germany at the present time, and Australia and Canada had taken powers to meet the situation.
