FOOTBALL.

Saturday last, the occasion of the Vincent Sub-union's annual seven-a-side tournament, Old Sol shone forth in all his glory in a cloudless sky. For the spectators the day was perfect, but there was ample evidence to show that it was too hot for the players, while the latter too must have been disconcerted by the sun in their eyes. The rec. at Alexandra held a record crowd, people being present from all parts of Central Otago, the gate takings amounting to £SO- - generally the exhibition of football was good, and there were many exciting and even contests. Roxburgh has invariably shown how a seven-a-side game should be played, although, strange to say, they have never managed to carry off fir»t honors in Vincent County, and in the tourney under notice they quite lived up to a wellearned reputation. They again failed to gain first place, but the general opinion was that they were the best team. The winners of the final (Lowburn) were by the element of chance given a bye in the semi-final, which on a day like Saturday particularly was a tremendous advantage. There should be no byes after the first round, but that was the only mistake in an otherwise well run tournament. There were no dull moments and the whole thing was completed in good time. In all 23 teams competed —-Seniors 12, juniors 5, and Schools 6 The Cromwell repswon the Juniors, playing nice football, _and throwing the ball about in good style- It is interesting to note that in this team were three sons of the late Capt. Jolly. The Schools was robbed of interest by the inclusion in the Queenstown team of two very much over grown lads, who might easier been taken to be entitled to a vote than under 14 years of ageThe recently formed Pipe Band enlivened proceedings materially with some inspiriting music, while the Brass Band also gave several much appreciated items. A Dance was held at night when the Town Hall was more than comfortably filledResults of the tournament: Seniors. Matakanui 12, Tarras 3. The latter's hard game in the first round had evidently taken the sting out of them as Tapanui were easily " top dogs-" Roxburgh East 5, Alexandra 3. This was another good game, in which Alexandra had a great chance of pulling it out of the fire, Campbell attempting to yol when e try looked a certainty. Semi-final. Roxburgh East 6, Tapanui 0. Some very pretty passing was witnessed in thts game, the winners getting two nice tries. Final. Lowburn 5,. Roxburgh East 3. Lowburn made the pace hot from the start and were soon attacking. Good play by Bob Gordon relieved, but a couple of minutes later Jack Haig scored near the corner flag. McFelin kicked a great goal- On changing ends Roxburgh East came with a rattle but were repulsed, Haig and McFelin stopping several rushes. Bob Gordon, who was playing well, badly beat the opposition, and ran round behind the posts. To the consternation of Roxburgh supporters the easiest of goals was missed. The game ended shortly alter.
