STRIKING A RATE.

—Striking of a Rate- — At the Vincent CountyCouncil meeting last Wednesday in conformity with the requirements of the Act regarding the notice of intention to strike a rate, Cr Ritchie moved that the rate be six farthings. — Seconded by Cr Mc Knight In speaking to the motion Cr. Ritchie said that he would have liked to reduce the rate to five farthings, but in view of the fact that they were compelled to pay £770 to reduce their antecedent liability, it was imperative to strike a six farthing rate. Cr. Weaver, once again advocated a differential rate, and he believed that if this were done his riding could carry on with a five farthing rate- The valuation in his riding mostly orchard lands had increased greatly. If he thought by the striking of a six farthing rate that he would get anything done to the bridges in his riding he would support the motion.

Cr. Mc Knight would be pleased to see a reduction in the rate, but was satisfied that it was impossible- The charitable and Hospital levy was steadily increasing and it had to be paid. He could not see where any material saving could be doneHis riding and the other ridings were simply hungering for money to be spent on urgoat works. If the rate were reduced there would be little chance of getting State grants.

Cr- Scoular said that he came to the Council table that day with the full intention of advocating a reduction in the rate, but it had been shown to him that it was impossible.

Cr. patterson supported the six farthing rate as he could not see how they could carry on with less-

Cr. Kane had hoped to see a reduction but he, like the other Crs., could now see it was possibleThe chairman endorsed the remarks of other councillors, and the motion was carried, CrWeaver voting against it.
