HOCKEY.

—*—- The hockey match Vincent v. Lake played at Cromwell on Saturday last was wen by Vincent by i goal to nil. On the day's play there was very little between the two teams. The game from beginning to end was of a very ragged nature, not nearly up to the standard one would expect in a county match. Play for the first ten minutes was very even, the ball travelling from one end to the other, hut after this for some time Vincent held the upper hand and pressed hard, but hard hitting from without the circle spoiled severai chances. P. Betts had several shots at goal within the space of a few minutes. One of these : from a beautiful centre by H. Keddeil looked a certainty but nothing came of it. From a penalty corner at this stage H. Keddeil secured and scored a very lucky goal, the ball just managing to crawl over the line. Lake then livened up but spoilt all their good play by hitting *over the line and never looking for the circle. Mrs Fox and M. Manning at this stage, and indeed throughout the game, played grand games, time and again stepping the rushes of the Lake forwards. It was thought in the second spell that Vincent would add a few goals to their score as they had easily the better of the game in the first spell, but such was not the case, as Lake had easily the best of the second half and Vincent was lucky to come out with a win. The combination on both sides was poor. Several times Lake broke away, but good play by N. Olsen saved on several occasions. About half wav through the second spell Lake County appeared to get a goal. One the Lake players shot at goal but A. Frater, Vincent goal keeper, stopped and instead of kicking or hitting to the side she kicked it straight out to an opponent who quickly shot at goal, the ball passing between the posts, but she was ruled off side, and a free hit to Vincent relieved the situation, Lake however, continued to press, and much scrambling took place in the circle. From one of these scrambles D. Clark obtained possession and took the ball almost the whole length of the ground, but failed to centre when she reached the full back, and lost the ball and chance of scoring. From a scramble H. Keddeil had a shot, the ball hitting one of the posts and going between, but she was ruled ollside. The game ended shortly afterwards. N. Olsen, M- Manning and jFp3 played ywy wdl
