BLIND FISH DEVELOP EYES.

Blind fish are found in dark caves. Such fish have atrophied eyes, that Is their eyes were once normal but through generations of disuse they have lost the power of vision. P. Kammerer. of Vienna, took several specimens of the species Proteus anguinus when young and placed them in a vessel of water in broad daylight. The eyes were almost covered with a pale and translucent skin, which turned perceptibly darker within a few days after the fish had boon taken from the cave.

To prevent a further development of the payment of tlio skin, which would have been fatal for the tiny eyes, Dr Karnrnerer temporarily subjected the water containing tho fish to red light. By breeding from these fish year after year Dr Karamerer obtained fish that had eyes like those of young salamanders within five years. Tho eyes were perfectly normal.
