The Dunstan Times “ Fiat iustitia ruat coelum." MONDAY, JULY 28th, 1913. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The matron of the Dunstan Hospital desires us to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a parcel oi linen from Mrs G Shelton and a case of fruit from Mr.W Annan. Persons having claims against the estate of Wm. Macdonald, late ol Lauder, deceased, are requested to forward particulars thereof to Mr J. I. Fraser, Solicitor, Naseby, on or before August 71!), and all moneys owing to the estate must be paid by the same date. At the conclusion of the Vincent County Council meeting on Thursday last Chairman Weaver drew the attention of Councillors to the very handsome framed photograph of the celebrations in connection with the recent Jubilee which had been hung in the Council Chambers as a memento of 1 a memorable occasion. He expressed the opinion that the picture would be more valued as the years passed and he thanked the Jubilee Executive lor their thoughtfulness in presenting it. The Clyde executive of the Jubilee met on Friday alternoon last lor the purpose of disposing of their share ol the surplus |L2p|. Mr J. S, Dickie presided, and after some discussion Mr H, E. Stevens moved that the money be voted as under: —Ly-ios to the Clyde Cemetery. Ly-ios to the Clyde Town Hall (to be devoted to reducing the loan on the gas plant) and the balance of Lio to the Dunstan Hospital, Mr J. Smart seconded the motion which was carried unanimously. The vote to the cemetery is to be spent in putting up a style, and providing a new notice board, It is pretty well agreed on all hands that the Opposition criticism of the Government’s inconsistency and general ineptitude has been most effective during th» Debate in-Reply. Three or four erving scandals have been handled in a masterly way, and Ministers have obviously winced under the castigation. However, warmer and better things are promised when our only Sir Joe takes his seat—and. incidentally and metaphorically, his coat off—at the end of the month.’ It is predicted that he will galvanise the Opposition attack into even greater virility. Then there will be music!— Wellington ‘Truth.’ The proposal of the Harbour Board to Include the whole of Vincent County in the Harbour Rating Area has not been pleasant news to district settlers. If carried it will mean an additional rate of probably Jfd in the £ on all rateable property—a matter of some moment to large holders In order to give effect to this, however, an enabling bill would have to be put through the House, and it cannot possibly become law for at least eighteen months. The matter is to be taken up by _ the local County Council and objections will doubtless be made to Vincent being included. Pressure on our space this week precludes giving the space to this question which it deserves, f but we will have something to say in a future issue. Considerable interest was taken by county workmen and indeed by residents generally' as to the late ot Ci Spain s motion to increase the wages ol County roadmen from 8s to ns per day. Unfortunately, however, owing to Cr Spain’s unavoidable absence consideration of the motion was held over till next meeting. The majority of the Councillors however, favor the increase and we have every reason to believe that the motion will be carried at the next meeting. Another motion on the Order Paper in Cr Spain’s name “That the meetings of the Council be held monthly instead of bi-monthly as at present,” received similar treatment, but the mover will have considerable difficulty in getting it carried. A monthly meeting would entail considerable additional office work with few commensurate advantages. We do think, however, that the wages ot County employees should be paid monthly. The whole question will be gone into fully at the nest County wbish to |

Mr D hersen, of Earnscleugh, has disposed of a portion of his orchard to Mr Scott of Dunedin, the price paid being Lr.ioo, As the area which changed hands consisted of 32 acres, the price paid represents L 34 7s 6d per acre. The Foresters’ Ball to be held on Friday, 22nd August promises to be the most successful yet held in this district. The tenders tor catering and music were considered on Saturday evening and were allotted to:— Wm, Black of Alexandra and Fred Partridge and party of Cromwell, respectively. Our Cromwell correspondent writes: —At the meeting of directors of the Rising Sun Co. on Wednesday, the secretary, Mr L. Harris, tendered his resignation on account of failing health. Friday, August 15th. the date of the ensuing general annual meeting will be the eleventh anniversary of Mr Harris's appointment to the secretaryship of the company. Men may come and men may go, And accidents fill the world with woe; But one thing that will ever endure Is W E. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, Which puts new life in rich and poor, And health and strength it doth restore; That’s why I am so very sure There’s nothing like Wood’s Peppermint Cure. Mr Laurenson believes that “Reform” is a beautiful word. It may mean something or nothing. Men travelling under an alias were suspected of having been in trouble. The present Government had many aliases. It pretended to reduce expenditure, but had increased it It pretended to travel less. It had travelled twice as much. It had pretended to abolish patronage. Patronage was uow rifer than ever. Warned Off !—How quickly the stranger whose movements were suspicious would be warned off and moved on. Yet the average} cold comes in equally suspicious guise, little or no effort being made to combat its sinister influences. At the first sign of its onslaught, flee to the tried and trusted household remedy, Tonking’s Linseed ( Emulsion. All chemists and stores, is6d, 2s 6d, 4s fid.
