Dunedin, May 31st.

Football.—The following is the result of Saturday’s matches Alhambra 14, Union 5. Kaikorai 21, Taieri 0. Southern 6, Port Chalmers 0. Dunedin n, Pirates 3. Zingari 25, University o. Local matches resulted as under. Alexandra 9, Lowburn 3. Cromwell 11, Bannockurn 6.

The Hon Thos. McKenzie opens the Winter Show to-morrow. The Premier has notified his inability to attend in view of the early meeting of Parliament and his proposed trip to England. A considerable number of Govt, clerks have received notice that their services are to be dispensed with. In one Department alone over forty will be dismissed. In the Agricultural Department it will probably be found necessary to dispense with the district stock inspectors, and their work will be done by a few inspectors sent out from head quarters. A number of noxious weeds inspectors and rabbit inspectors in all probability will also have to seek other employment shortly. Wellington.

There will in all probability be three candidates for the speakership of the House, the Hon. MrGuiness, Mr T. M, Wilford and Mr F. E. Baume.

In the first test match Australia in their first innings made 74. and in their second 151. England’s first innings resulted in 121, and their second in 105 for no wickets. The latter thus won by 10 wickets. Christchurch.

Speaking at the North Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show the Hon. Mr Buddo said he was of the opinion that the recent stringency in the money market had no doubt been caused by the banks advancing money to make deposits to purchase land, very ofen in the suburbs of large towns. This had led to a shortage of capital with which to do legitimate banking business and very considerable difficulty had been experienced by traders in really good positions in getting accommodation $9 carry on their businesses.
